Licensing in Office 365 is no more an easy topic to discuss. Microsoft is trying to provide customers with highly flexible options. The result is that there are many license types which an administrator must know to find the appropriate licences for his company. Within this article I’ll briefly describe the currently available plans to make it easier to understand what’s available and what fits best. It is important to understand that these plans can change any time and reflect the status of October 2016.

Office 365 Business plans

All Office 365 Business plans count for up to 300 users. If you have more, you should have a look at Enterprise plans.

Office 365 Business Essentials

  • Exchange Online mailbox with 50GB space
  • OneDrive with 1TB space
  • Office in browser
  • Skype for Business Online

Office 365 Business

  • OneDrive with 1TB space
  • Office packet (downloadable)
  • Office in browser

Office 365 Business Premium

  • Exchange Online mailbox with 50GB space
  • OneDrive with 1TB space
  • Office packet (downloadable)
  • Office in browser
  • Skype for Business Online

Office 365 ProPlus

This is an abonnement on an Office Suite which can always be downloaded and used on-premises in the most recent version.

Enterprise plans

Enterprise plans can always be used, even if you have less than 300 users – if the feature of your need is not available in other plans.

Office 365 Enterprise E1

  • Exchange Online mailbox with 50GB space
  • OneDrive with 1 TB space
  • Office in browser
  • Skype for Business Online
  • SharePoint Online

Office 365 Enterprise E3

All features of Office 365 Enterprise E1 and additionally:

  • Unlimited archive mailbox in Exchange Online
  • Office packet (downloadable)
  • Voicemail
  • Simplified eDiscovery Center

Office 365 Enterprise E5

All features von Office 365 Enterprise E3 and additionally:

  • PowerBI
  • PSTN Conferencing (depending on the user’s region)
  • Enhanced security with Advanced Threat Protection and customer-lockbox

Enterprise Mobility + Security (EMS)

Recently known as „Enterprise Mobility Suite“, this option was designed to add enhanced security features from Microsoft Azure to Office 365.

Enterprise Mobility + Security E3

This ist he former Enterprise Mobility Suite, containing:

  • Azure AD Premium P1
  • Microsoft Intune
  • Azure Information Protection Premium P1
  • Microsoft Advanced Threat Analytics

Enterprise Mobility + Security E5

All features of Enterprise Mobility + Security E3 and additional:

  • Azure AD Premium P2
  • Azure Information Protection Premium P2
  • Microsoft Cloud App Security

Secure Productive Enterprise

This license model is the most recent one and was before known as Enterprise Cloud Suite (ECS). SPE combines the Office 365 Enterprise plans with EMS plans. So there are the following options available:

Secure Productive Enterprise E3

This ist he former Enterprise Cloud Suite. The following components are contained:

  • Office 365 Enterprise E3
  • Enterprise Mobility + Security E3
  • Windows 10 Enterprise E3 (former Windows 10 Enterprise)

Secure Productive Enterprise E5

  • Office 365 Enterprise E5
  • Enterprise Mobility + Security E5
  • Windows 10 Enterprise E5 (will be announced and released later and contain Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection)

Office 365 Kiosk

These plans are wor workplaces which are shared by multiple people. There are the following options:

Exchange Online Kiosk

  • Exchange Online Postfach with 2GB space

Office 365 Enterprise K1

  • Exchange Online mailbox with 2GB space
  • Yammer
  • SharePoint Online
  • Office in browser

Of course each license option can be purchased individually. For educational, gonervance and nonprofit organizations other regulations may count.
